(OrganicJar) When it comes to having healthy hair, it’s more important to step out of the shower and into the kitchen. Without adequate nutrition, hair is more likely to be dull, to be thin and to turn gray. A change in diet and vitamin intake can improve the heath and appearance of your hair.

So if you’re looking to improve the health of your hair consider supplementing your diet with these vitamins and minerals. Don’t forget, the best way to obtain these nutrients is from whole foods.

The Most Important Vitamins for Healthy Hair:

Folic Acid (Vitamin B9 or Folate)

One of the most important nutrients to prevent hair loss.

Folic Acid is one of the most chemically complicated vitamins and is vital to the proper functioning of the human body. Folic Acid aids in tissue growth and the proper functioning of cells. It’s responsible for hair growth by renewing the cells that grow hair, a deficiency in folic acid can inhibit the health of your hair and lead to premature graying and hair loss.

Best food source for Folic Acid: Lentils, spinach, asparagus, turnip greens, beans, and sunflower seeds.
Suggested Daily Dose of Folic Acid: 400 mcg

Vitamin A

The second most important vitamin for hair loss prevention.

Vitamin A is an antioxidant known to improve hair texture and sheen. Vitamin A protects your hair from free radical damage and assist in producing sebum in the scalp which leads to healthy oils throughout the hair preventing dry hair. Also, vitamin A is used to help your body deal with stress, which can be a key factor of hair loss.

Best food source for Vitamin A: Liver, dandelion greens, carrots, broccoli leaf, sweet potato, kale, spinach, and cantaloupe melon.
Suggested Daily Dose of Vitamin A: 5,000 IU *More than 25,000 IU of animal Vitamin A (Retinol) is toxic and can cause hair loss and other serious health problems. There is no reported limit to plant Vitamin A (Carotenoids).

Vitamin C (Ascorbic Acid)

The most essential vitamin for protecting hair against free radicals.

Vitamin C is an antioxidant vitamin. Vitamin C increases blood circulation throughout the body, including the scalp and helps prevent hair breakage, and promotes hair growth. It is also known to prevent both discoloration and hair loss. Dry and splitting hair may be the result of a deficiency in Vitamin C.

Best food source for Vitamin C: Camu Camu, acerola, rose hip, green chili pepper, guava, red pepper, parsley, kiwifruit, and broccoli
Suggested Daily Dose of Vitamin C: 1,500 mg

The most important vitamin for increasing scalp circulation.

Vitamin E is another antioxidant that enhances scalp circulation and is essential to the overall appearance of your hair. Vitamin E is known to help in the production and repair of hair cells, which in turn prevents split ends, aids in the prevention of hair loss and helps your hair grow faster.

Best food source for Vitamin E: Wheat germ oil, sunflower oil, safflower oil, almonds, hazelnuts, spinach, turnip, beet, and avocado.
Suggested Daily Dose of Vitamin E: Up to 1000 IU. *Over 1000 IU can raise blood pressure and reduce clotting so check with your doctor if you’re on high blood pressure medications.

Biotin (Vitamin B7 or Vitamin H)

The most important vitamin for hair growth.

Biotin has the important function of helping cells produce energy. It produces a fibrous protein called keratin that helps prevent hair loss and hair greying. Biotin also increases the elasticity of the hair’s cortex, thus preventing breakage. A Biotin deficiency can leave your scalp itchy and scaly.

Best food source for Biotin: Swiss chard, raw egg yolks, liver, saskatoon berries, leafy green vegetables, and peanuts.
Suggested Daily Dose of Biotin: 35 mcg

Vitamin B12

The second most important vitamin for hair growth.

Vitamin B12 is an essential nutrient used in DNA formation as well as the creation of red blood cells that provide oxygen to all the vital organs in the body. The hair follicles require oxygen just like the rest of your body and if there is a shortage the hair follicles don’t receive proper nutrients. A deficiency in Vitamin B12 can result in hair loss, slow hair growth, and premature greying.

Best food source for Vitamin B12: Liver, oysters, clams, mussels, octopus, mackerel, crab, beef and cheese.
Suggested Daily Dose of Vitamin B12: 5 mcg

Niacin (Vitamin B3)

An essential vitamin to prevent hair thinning.

Niacin plays an essential role in assisting with the body’s energy production. Niacin has a dilating effect on blood vessels and capillaries which results in an increase in circulation throughout the body including the scalp. This increase in circulation helps stimulate hair growth and prevent hair thinning. Studies have found niacin works best when combined with biotin.

Best food source for Niacin: Yeast extract (marmite), rice and wheat bran, tuna, liver, paprika, peanuts, veal, chicken, and sun-dried tomatoes.
Suggested Daily Dose of Niacin: 20 mg

(OrganicJar) When you think of superfoods spinach typically doesn’t come to mind. You probably think of hemp seeds, goji berries, or maca root. What makes it deserve superfod status is the truly impressive list of compounds that have been discovered in spinach.

Beyond the iron that Popeye was yearning for, spinach contains carotenoids, antioxidants, vitamin K, coenzyme Q10, B vitamins, minerals, chlorophyll, polyphenols, betaine and, interestingly, plant-derived omega-3 fatty acids. This is a condensed list and it’s hard to convey the powerful impact of these nutrients as they work synergistically to promote health but to put it simply: just about anything that is or might ever be wrong with your health, you can battle with spinach.

Spinach is a Powerhouse of Nutrients:

In just one cup of cooked spinach…

High in Protein - The highest vegetable protein around! One cup of spinach equals 5g of protein. (12% DV)

Super high in Vitamin A – Over 18,000 IU (377% DV). Vitamin A benefits the heart by preventing cholesterol from becoming oxidized in the body.

Crazy high in Vitamin K – Second only to Cauliflower with over 880 mcg (1111% DV) Vitamin K is essential as it helps calcium adhere to the bone making them stronger.

Great source of Folate/Folic Acid – Over 260 mcg or 66% DV. Which is particularly important for pregnant or nursing women.

Nice source of Vitamin C – With 17.6 mg or 29% DV. This also benefits the heart by preventing cholesterol from becoming oxidized in the body.

Great source of Minerals - 84% DV of manganese, 39% DV of magnesium, 36% DV of iron, 24% DV of potassium, and 24% DV of calcium.

13 Flavonoids that help to fight cancer, protect against age related memory loss, and prevent heart disease.

Decent source of Fiber with 4.3g or 17% DV.

All this in one cup of spinach and we’re still not done!

How Spinach Improves Your Health:

Anti-Cancer and Anti-Inflammatory Antioxidants

Researchers have identified more than a dozen different flavonoid compounds in spinach that function as anti-inflammatory and anti-cancer agents. In a recent study on the relationship between risk of prostate cancer and vegetable intake (including such healthy vegetables as broccoli, cabbage, and brussel sprouts) only spinach showed evidence of significant protection against the occurrence of aggressive prostate cancer.

Alkalizes the Body

All those minerals helps to balance off the highly acid diet which most of us subject our bodies to and which drains our energy, increases obesity, and creates a host of other health problems.

Nourishes the Eyes

The carotenoids found in spinach protect against eye diseases such as cataracts and macular degeneration.

Prevents Atherosclerosis and Diabetic Heart Disease

Spinach is an excellent source of vitamin C and vitamin A, the latter notably through its concentration of beta-carotene. These two nutrients are important antioxidants that work to reduce the amounts of free radicals in the body; vitamin C works as a water-soluble antioxidant and beta-carotene as a fat-soluble one. This water-and-fat-soluble antioxidant team helps to prevent cholesterol from becoming oxidized and sticking to your blood vessel walls.

Clears Up Acne

The most useful vitamins of spinach are vitamin A, C, E, and K. They are great for your skin. The antioxidants contained in spinach will clear up acne quickly. They will also help with eczema, psoriasis, and even prevent skin cancer from the sun.

Strengthens the Bones

One cup of fresh spinach (or 1/6 cup of cooked spinach) contains TWICE your daily vitamin K needs. This along with the calcium and magnesium in spinach is essential to maintain healthy bones.

Health Benefits of Spinach: Cooked or Raw?

The short answer: both.

Health benefits to cooking spinach: cooking releases beta-carotene and lutein, and it also neutralizes oxalic acid or oxalate, a compound that inhibits the absorption of both calcium and iron. This is why you don’t reuse the cooking water from spinach. It’s recommended that you boil spinach quickly – just for a minute!

Health benefits to raw spinach: Vitamin C and folate are both very heat-sensitive, so to obtain the maximum benefits of these compounds, eat spinach in your salads.

Use it Up Quickly!

By the eighth day after harvest, even when refrigerated well, spinach has lost so many of its nutrients that it might not even be worthy of superfood status anymore. For example, almost half the folic acid is gone after eight days(and how long does it take to get from the field to your door?). Use that spinach as soon as possible, and blanch and freeze it if you can’t use it quickly.

Tips and Cautions:

Tip #1: Make sure you only choose organic spinach. Non-organic spinach is on the list of top foods with lots of chemical pesticides. You can assume that canned spinach is NOT organic. I can’t imagine anyone eating canned spinach anyway but since we mentioned Popeye I thought I had better mention that.

Tip #2: Choose the greenest looking spinach you can find. Probably you would have anyway, but studies have shown that the greenest spinach has the most vitamin C.

Tip #3: Because spinach contains high levels of so many nutrients it also has significant levels of oxalic acid. This has been associated with kidney problems and interference with absorption of other minerals.

(OrganicJar) Do you have trouble focusing? Is your concentration just not what it used to be? Or are you struggling with memory loss? The ability to focus and channel our concentration into the task at hand, whether it’s work, reading, or play is more important than ever today. The near constant distractions of the digital age manifest as ADD, memory lapses, low test scores, mood swings, or senior moments when we cannot find our car keys.

The good news is there are herbal remedies that can help. Below are my three top picks for herbs that can help you boost brainpower, increase alertness, reverse memory loss, ease fatigue and even help you sleep.

Before starting any herbal treatment or remedy, please check with your doctor first.

3 Herbs for Increasing Focus, Memory, and Brain Power

Rhodiola Rosea

Rhodiola Rosea is an herb that has been extensively studied in Russia and Scandinavian for over 35 years. Studies have shown that rhodiola reduces stress, enhances mood, helps with sleep, increases alertness and mental focus, can improve exercise performance, and supports normal levels of neurotransmitters – serotonin, norepinephrine, and dopamine.

Rhodiola has also been used to fight fatigue, improve memory, and increase attention span, making it helpful for those suffering from the more sluggish type of ADD. In addition, scientific evidence points to an ability to fuel sexual energy, boost immunity, and ease depression. Studies on fruit flies showed that it was a factor in increased longevity. Suggested Dose: 50-100 milligrams 2-4 times per day and it is best taken on an empty stomach.

Bacopa Monnieri

Bacopa is understood to be the most potent and effective nerve and brain tonic in Ayurvedic medicine. In Sanskrit it means creator. It boosts your memory and is a mild sedative so you have this calming effect but you feel more alert. Some call it natures smart pill. It has been traditionally used to treat mental illness, anxiety, depression, memory loss, epilepsy and psychosis. Today, Ayurvedic doctors use it to support cognitive and focus issues. Suggested Dose: 100-300 milligrams 1-2 times per day

Ginkgo Biloba

Ginkgo Biloba is one of the world’s oldest surviving tree species. For thousands of years traditional healers have used it for a diverse array of common conditions. According to the National Institutes of Health, most of ginkgo biloba’s medicinal effects relate to its efficacy as a circulatory enhancer. Compounds in ginkgo leaf appear to dilate blood vessels, thereby increasing blood flow to the legs, ears, eyes and brain. This increased blood flow explains the herb’s well documented memory enhancing effects.

New research is showing that it may be effective in treating libido issues associated with anti-depressant drugs. Be careful as Gingko is a blood thinner. Suggested Dose: 60-120 milligrams 1-4 times per day

It’s always best to consult a doctor first when implementing powerful herbal remedies such as these.

Herbal Teas Worth Mentioning:

Here are a few other herbs – not covered in this article – that can help to induce a restful nights sleep: Hops (Humulus lupulus), Lemon balm (Melissa officinalis), Borage (Borago officinalis), Arabian jasmine (Jasminum sambac), and Lemon grass (Cymbopogon citratus).

Suggested Brewing Methods for Herbal Teas:

For each serving of tea desired bring 1 cup of water to a boil (preferable in an enameled or glass pan, I use this Glass Electric Kettle & Bodum YoYo Infuser). Remove the pan from the heat and add 1 teaspoon of dried or 1 tablespoon of fresh herbs to the pan or infuser. Let this mixture steep for 10 to 15 minutes. Place a lid on top of your container while it steeps to prevent the volatile essential oils from escaping. It is these essential oils which contain the medicinal properties that you are exploiting for use in your herbal beverage. Strain the herbs from the water and pour the tea into your favorite tea cup.

You could also use a French press or tea pot with a built in infuser basket. FYI: those little tea balls you find in some kitchen gadget stores don’t have enough room for the herbs to move around freely. If the herbs can’t move around freely in the water while they are steeping you will wind up with an inferior cup of tea.

My Thoughts on Herbal Teas:

If you don’t already know, well, I love tea. Just the thought of my morning tea (sencha or matcha) gets me out of bed in the morning. Then throughout my day I continuously consume herbal teas/infusions – tisanes – especially in the evening when I’m unwinding. I think most of us experience stress on a regular basis and consuming one of these tisanes might just help you relax as they have helped me.

(OrganicJar) There has been an overwhelming amount of research published over the last few years about the health benefits of a supplement called Krill Oil. I had never even heard of it until about 6 months ago when I was Googling ways I could naturally lower my cholesterol and improve a bit of mental fog I was experiencing. After spending what seemed like too many nights reading scientific journals about it on PubMed I decided to just give it a try. It’s been 4 months now and I’m extremely surprised at how effective it’s been (more about that at the end of the article). But first, what are Krill?

Krill are little crustaceans that look like shrimp and provide food for everything from salmon to blue whales and are one of the most nutritious creatures in the sea. Not only are they loaded with a powerful antioxidant called astaxanthin, but they’re a great source of omega-3 fatty acids which for years research has shown to help lower an individual’s risk for heart attack, stroke, certain cancers, depression and overall inflammation. The oil is naturally found in a species of krill called the Euphausia Superba and is extracted and sold as a nutritional supplement.
There has been a lot of research showing krill oil to be superior to fish oil in head-to-head testing. It has found to be healthier, safer, more potent and especially more absorbable.

Health Benefits of Krill Oil vs Fish Oil

The reason krill oil is more effective than other marine oils is the amount of omega-3 fatty acids, phospholipids and extremely potent antioxidants. It’s the unique combination of these essential ingredients that provide the greatest health benefits.

Krill oil, like fish oil, contains both of the omega-3 fats eicosapentanoic acid (EPA) and docosahexanoic acid (DHA), but hooked together in a different form. In fish oil these omega-3 fatty acids are found in the triglyceride form whereas in krill oil they are hooked up in a double chain phospholipid structure (The fats in our own cell walls are in this phospholipid form). Attached to the EPA leg of the phospholipid is a molecule of astaxanthin, an extremely potent antioxidant. The phospholipid structure of the EPA and DHA in krill oil makes them much more absorbable and allows for a much easier entrance into the mitochondria and the cellular nucleus – especially a better absorption and delivery of DHA to the brain. In addition to EPA and DHA krill oil contains a complex phospholipid profile including phosphatidylcholine, a potent source of reductive-stress-reducing choline. Research indicates that phospholipid omega-3 fatty acids (found in krill oil) have greater bioavailability for cell growth and functioning, compared with omega-3 triglycerides (found in fish oil).

10 Most Important Health Benefits of Krill Oil:

Powerful Antioxidant

Krill oil contains vitamin E, vitamin A, vitamin D and astaxanthin, a potent antioxidant. When compared to fish oil in terms of ORAC (Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity) values it was found to be 48 times more potent than fish oil. Antioxidants are important as they protect our cells from damage from free radicals – unstable substances that contribute to certain chronic diseases. Unlike many other antioxidants, krill’s astaxanthin crosses the blood-brain barrier where it can protect the eye, brain and central nervous system from free radical damage.

Protects Your Heart

Results from a study published in the Journal of the American College of Nutrition reported that krill oil can significantly reduce heart-damaging inflammation. The study was conducted by measuring the presence of C-Reactive Protein (CRP) levels in the blood. One way to measure the risk of heart damage is to examine the amount of the body’s CRP levels. The group that had been taking 300 mg of krill oil daily reduced their CRP levels by 19.3% after seven days and 29.7% after 14 days.

Reduces Inflammation and Arthritis Pain

Low levels of omega 3 in the body lead to inflammation, which further leads to other diseases. Krill oil has several anti-inflammatory properties. That means that a regular dose of krill oil can reduce general joint pains, back pain, swelling and inflammatory arthritis. There have also been a number of studies conducted that found that krill oil was effective in reliving some of the symptoms and effects of osteoporosis.

The results of a study published in the American Journal of Nutrition highlighted the effects of krill oil on chronic inflammation and arthritic symptoms. The study was conducted by Western University in collaboration with McMaster University. Participants included 90 patients who were diagnosed with inflammatory conditions such as cardiovascular disease, rheumatoid arthritis and / or osteoarthritis. Findings revealed that krill oil reduced pain by 28.9%, stiffness by 20.3% and functional impairment by 22.8%. Moreover, results indicated that krill oil ”significantly inhibits inflammation and reduces arthritic symptoms within a short treatment period of 7 and 14 days.”

Improves Brain Function and Development

The important nutrients choline and omega fatty acids in krill oil are helpful in enhancing normal brain functioning and improving memory, cognition and behavior. A study at the University of California, Berkley, suggests that low levels of Omega-3s, particularly DHA and EPA may contribute to cognitive decline. Findings indicate that regular consumption of Omega-3s, especially sources rich in EPA and DHA (such as krill oil), can considerably improve cognitive function. Moreover, a study of 30 adults with attention difficulties showed 46% improvement in mental concentration and 48.9 % mental focus after 90 days of taking krill oil supplements. Furthermore, krill oil contains the powerful antioxidant astaxanthin, which has the rare ability to cross the blood-brain barrier and rid the body of free radicals that can lead to cognitive impairment.

Regulates LDL (Bad) and HDL (Good) Cholesterol

This is actually a very difficult thing to do and not many substances can do it. A number of studies have shown that krill oil is tremendously effective in reducing LDL cholesterol, raising HDL cholesterol, and lowering blood sugar. Studies have shown where fish oil reduced the “LDL” or the bad cholesterol by only 4.6%, krill oil reduced the LDL by 34%. Alternatively, it increased the HDL or good cholesterol by 43.5% in comparison to the fish oil, which showed improvement in HDL by 4.2%.

Krill oil contains nutrients that can help reduce acne outbreaks, lessen the symptoms of psoriasis, especially the redness and itching and make skin feel softer and more hydrated. Oral and topical use of Krill oil has also been shown to be a skin cancer prophylactic (a medicine used to prevent disease) because it contains retinol and astaxanthin which are known for their anti-carcinogenic effect. The astaxanthin found in krill oil also provides excellent protection against ultraviolet light and UV-induced skin damage.

Improves Immune System

Numerous studies prove that krill oil’s benefits can improve your overall health by strengthening your immune system, optimizing kidney function, regulating the body’s hormone levels, elevating your mood and emotional well-being, balancing blood sugar levels, regulating blood pressure levels, supporting eye health and boosting your energy.

Improves Mental Health

The right amount of krill oil can be helpful in improving mental health of people suffering from depression, mood swings, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), attention deficit and hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), and bipolar disorder. It can also help lessen the effects of stress, something that affects so many people.

Alleviates Premenstrual Symptoms (PMS)

Numerous studies have been able to link a lack of Omega-3 acids in the body with the severity of PMS symptoms in women. These studies found the introduction of a krill oil supplement to not only be effective in reliving physical problems like bloating but helpful with the emotional ones as well. 73% of women showed a clinically significant reduction in both emotional and physical distress prior to menstruation. They were taking 1-4 grams per day 7 to 10 days prior to menstruation.

Anti-Aging Properties

The antioxidants present in krill oil have been found to be effective in fighting the effects of free radicals in the body. This can lead to improved skin texture and a reduction in wrinkles, stronger nails and healthier, thicker hair. Numerous ORAC (Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity) tests have proven that krill oil effectively repairs aging cells when compared to other antioxidants. In fact, independent labs confirmed that krill oil contains an ORAC value of 430 while fish oil has an ORAC value of 8. This means krill oil has over 48 times more antioxidant power than fish oil.

Cautions On Krill Oil

If you are allergic to shrimp you should not take krill oil supplements since you could also get an allergic reaction to it. If this is you, then you should stick to fish oil supplements. Plus if you are on blood thinners, you should consult your doctor before taking any fish or krill supplements.

My Thoughts on the Benefits of Krill Oil:

After taking the supplements for several months I noticed my mental fog was gone, my ability to focus had improved, my hair was softer (wasn’t expecting that), I felt happier, and the whites of my eyes were whiter (wasn’t expecting that either). I’m having my cholesterol tested next month so I’ll let you know those results when I get them.

Some of you might be wondering which brand of krill oil I take. Before I tell you I want to make it clear that this is not a commercial endorsement and I am not being paid by this company. This is my own independent recommendation from my own research. That said, I have been using NKO Neptune Krill Oil Gold by Nutrigold. Here is a link to the exact product and place I buy it on Amazon: NKO Neptune Krill Oil Gold. I take 500mg in the morning and 500mg in the afternoon.

I have several friends as well as my mother who just started taking Krill Oil and I’ll be monitoring them over the next several months so make sure to sign-up for my newsletter so you can follow along. Cheers! – Jason

Have you gone mad? If you’re part of the 64% of the US population who drinks coffee everyday it might be a good idea to know the negative side of this deliciously addictive liquid. Coffee or should I say the caffeine within coffee is a psychotropic drug which alters our brain chemistry. That caffeine high comes with a steep price tag – your health.

I’m not going to lie and say I never drink a cup of coffee (you can read more of my personal thoughts at the end) and I’m not telling you to eliminate caffeine entirely from your diet. But the less caffeine you consume, the better off you are especially if you’re not currently healthy.

It damages our ability to produce feel-good brain chemicals, or neurotransmitters. Have you heard of serotonin? It’s the brain chemical most of us don’t get enough of. It’s the reason so many of people are taking antidepressants. Caffeine actually depletes serotonin. Simple Truth: Coffee is a cheap high that robs us of the building blocks for good chemistry.

The adrenals are considered the storage center for the vital force, your inherited reservoir of energy. It helps produce brain chemicals that make you fell energetic, focused and ready to work. Caffeine is a central nervous system stimulant and causes the adrenal glands to secrete adrenaline – the hormone your body depends on in emergencies – but caffeine exhausts your adrenals. If your caffeine sensitivity has diminished or you’re one of those who claims you can drink 3 shots of espresso and go right to sleep, guess what? Your adrenals have given up responding. This leaves you vulnerable to many health hazards. Adrenal fatigue is one of the fastest growing problems. (I’ll be writing more about this soon.)

When our adrenal glands are exhausted, they can’t produce sufficient sex hormones. For one, testosterone. (Even women produce testosterone, although not as much as men.) Low testosterone = low sex drive.

Caffeine Hurts Fertility

Women need adequate progesterone in order to get pregnant and carry a pregnancy to term. Progesterone means “for gestation.” Stress requires that we use more and more cortisol. When our adrenal glands are burned out, we can’t make enough cortisol. So our body will steal as much progesterone as it needs to make cortisol.

I think we all know how vital it is to get relaxing sleep at night. Caffeine reduces your sleep and research shows that people who consume more than 2-3 cups (an actual measuring cup, not your giant mug) per day have poor sleep quality.

Tea can cause iron absorption to drop by 60 percent and coffee can cause a 50 percent decrease in iron uptake.” (Source)

In all, more than 150 hormones are produced by the adrenals or metabolized from adrenal hormones. One group, known as glucocorticoids (including cortisol), act as a brake on the immune system. Scientists have recently learned that excess glucocorticoid production (caused by stress and caffeine) can profoundly suppress immunity.

Our thyroid gland controls our metabolism. Low thyroid function = slow metabolism and weight gain. Caffeine stresses the adrenal glands. Our thyroid gland works in tandem with our adrenals. We need healthy adrenals for the thyroid to work properly. So if you’re stressing out your adrenal glands with coffee, you’re slowing down your metabolism.

Caffeine Could Damage Your Liver

Caffeine is broken down by the liver through the use of enzymes. The more these enzymes are involved in breaking down caffeine, the less available they are for breaking down other chemicals in the bloodstream. Excessive caffeine use, therefore, causes the liver to work less efficiently at its job of detoxifying the body.

Coffee is the most chemically treated food crop on the planet. Period. It is heavily sprayed with pesticides and grown with chemical fertilizers. Many of which even kill the workers. Over 1,000 chemicals have been found in roasted coffee. 19 of these chemicals are known carcinogens (known to cause cancer). Decaf coffee is even worse because chemical solvents are used to extract the caffeine.

MY THOUGHTS:

I was one of those individuals who drank coffee all day long, and even through the night. However it became to taxing on my body and I noticed the signs. I would “need” that cup of coffee to even function, my skin was extremely dry, I had acne, and the worst was coming off that caffeine high. It was a vicious cycle that became to much. So I switched to tea and herbal infusions and slowly kicked my caffeine addiction and wouldn’t you know it, my urge for it left, my dry skin and acne disappeared and I felt a consistent energy throughout the day. I still enjoy a nice cup of “organic” coffee now and then but like all drugs I function better without – something I didn’t realize or think was possible until I overcame my caffeine addition.

The take away message is this. If you’re healthy, fit, and happy then keep drinking that coffee. If you’re not I would highly suggest you start by cutting out all the caffeine in your life and yes, that includes green and black teas as well as chocolate [I hear screams]. Keep in mind this isn’t forever, just until you get back to feeling happy and healthy. – Jason

(Natural Society) Often marketed as Equal and Nutrasweet, aspartame is a well-known neurotoxic sweetener used in many food products.

This cancer-causing artificial sweetener is threatening the health of populations worldwide, and has even been found to be created using genetically modified bacteria.

While most individuals know about aspartame and its dangers, there is another, lesser known sweetener in the food supply that many people don’t know about – Neotame.

Neotame: An Unknown Artificial Sweetener Lurking in Your Food

Introduced by biotech giant Monsanto, Neotame was created as a new sweetener and flavor enhancer to be used in food products. On July 9, 2002, the United States Food and Drug Administration decided that Neotame’s safety and functionality made it available for consumption, thus resulting in its approval. What’s concerning is, while Neotame has a similar structure to aspartame, the chemicals used in its manufacturing process seem to make the sweetener even more toxic than aspartame.

Both aspartame and Neotame are made up of substances which metabolize into a highly toxic poison known as formaldehyde. In addition, they contain an exctiotoxic amino acid that agitates, thereby damaging nerves. Although very similar to aspartame in chemical structure, Neotame has one chemical added that aspartame does not possess – 3-dimethylbutyl, which just so happens to be on the Environmental Protection Agency’s most hazardous chemical list.

HolisticMed reports:
Neotame has similar structure to aspartame – except that, from it’s structure, appears to be even more toxic than aspartame. This potential increase in toxicity will make up for the fact that less will be used in diet drinks. Like aspartame, some of the concerns include gradual neurotoxic and immunotoxic damage from the combination of the formaldehyde metabolite (which is toxic at extremely low doses) and the excitotoxic amino acid.

Neotame’s manufacturing process involves combining aspartame with 3,3-dimethylbutyraldehyde, a chemical categorized as a highly flammable irritant. The largest argument for the use of this sweetener, as well as aspartame, is that they battle against obesity, but it is well known that sweeteners like aspartame actually lead to obesity.

The worst part? Even if you wanted to avoid this sweetener, you may find it impossible to do so. Not only are there no labeling rules for Neotame, but it is even included in the USDA certified organic food.

So what is the solution? If you are trying to avoid Neotame, the best thing to do is buy all organic items that have no or very little ingredients. The less ingredients, the less chance Neotame could be hiding out.

Given the history behind Monsanto and its other creations - Agent Orange, Roundup, and GMO crops – it seems quite clear that their Neotame is no exception for consumption.

(OrganicJar) In a study that may come as a stunning New Age challenge to artists like Yanni and Enya, a group of UK scientists have gotten together and clinically determined the most relaxing song ever made.

The track, titled ‘Weightless’ and performed by a Manchester-based band named Marconi Union, was described as “even more relaxing than a massage, walk or cup of tea.” The study found ‘Weightless’ to be 11 percent more relaxing than songs by Adele, Coldplay or Mozart.

Lyz Cooper, founder of the British Academy for Sound Therapy, worked with the band to create the song, which she described as “ideal for putting on at the end of a stressful day and unwinding.”

Cooper said, “The song makes use of many musical principles that have been shown to individually have a calming effect. The harmonic intervals — or gaps between notes — have been chosen to create a feeling of euphoria and comfort. And there is no repeating melody, which allows your brain to completely switch off because you are no longer trying to predict what is coming next.”

Dr. David Lewis-Hodgson, one of the scientists who helped conduct the study, even went so far as to warn, “I would advise against driving while listening to the song because it could be dangerous.”

So the next time you’re feeling stressed out and craving a little break from our overwhelmingly fast-paced modern world, just remember: eight minutes of clinically proven relaxation are just a mouse click away.

THE GIST:

(OrganicJar) A study of over 80 thousand women of various paths and lifestyles showed that consuming Vitamin D – found in natural food sources – significantly decreased their depressive symptoms.

The research concluded that Vitamin D, in addition to being a crucial part of the human body’s chemistry, directly affects the functioning of the dopamine and norepinephrine receptors.

Even consuming just 400 IU of Vitamin D – which is significantly lower than the optimal 5,000 IU most adults should take – revealed a 20 percent lower risk of depressive symptoms.

A similar study among the elderly in 2006 showed that those with lower Vitamin D levels were 11 times more likely to exhibit depressive symptoms.

Don’t forget the best Vitamin D is free, from the sun.

Vitamin D Defeats Depression Naturally, Without Nasty Side Effects

by Patrick Gallagher
Natural Society

Studied across a wide variety (81000 count) of women of various paths and lifestyles, Vitamin D when found in natural food sources had been related to significantly lower depressive symptoms among women than those who do not consume foods rich in Vitamin D.

The researchers particularly involved in the study seem to be under the impression that Vitamin D, in addition to being a crucial part of the human body’s chemistry, may directly affect the functioning dopamine and norepinephrine receptors, causing an imbalance in the brain which may lead to depressive symptoms.

It’s not a secret that Vitamin D is known to fend off depression.

A study among the elderly in 2006 showed that those with lower levels of vitamin D were many times more likely to be depressed as those with healthy doses, sometimes upwards of 11 times more likely.

Depression improved even with vitamin D levels significantly lower than optimal

The most current study revealed that those who consumed more than 400 IU of Vitamin D from food sources was correlated with up to a 20 percent lower risk of depressive symptoms, when compared to those who consumed 4 times less.

Unfortunately 400 IU is but a scratch on the surface of the benefits that could be reaped from this powerful necessity: Most adults should be taking upwards of 5,000 IU into their systems daily in order to partially receive these benefits.

Such increased effects, though intended fully by nature to be harvested from the sun, can be found in supplemental packages as well as sparsely in some food groups.

Though it is better to get it from the sun, supplements will sustain the body’s need for this crucial component of both mental and physical health. Ironically enough sunlight exposure is something argued against by public health departments in order to prevent cancer, when in fact the Vitamin D accumulated from such exposure actually prevents cancer.

(OrganicJar) Put that apple down and review its pesticide count on this iPhone app before taking a bite. Did you know that there are 42 different pesticides residues on conventional apples! 7 are known carcinogens, 19 hormone disruptors, 10 neurotoxins, 6 development/reproductive toxins and 17 residues that are toxic to honey bees. While organic apples have only 3 pesticide residues…total.

I’m a huge supporter of buying organic and especially locally grown food. Our body is our temple and even though eating an apple with 42 ‘known’ pesticide residues won’t kill you, who knows what happens when you eat those apples for 10, 20, 30 years along with all the other foods laden with pesticides. To say that it wouldn’t have an effect on our body or mind is foolish in my eyes.

So for those of you who want to know what pesticide residues are in your food, check out the FREE iPhone app: What’s On My Food. It has a database of over 90 foods so far and growing.

Where The Data Comes From

The information uses data from toxicology data cross-referenced with multiple authoritative listings, PAN’s Pesticide Info database, which tracks toxicity, chemical composition and regulatory information on thousands of pesticides, and millions of tests from USDA’s Pesticide Data Program. With it, you can see which health risks are associated with particular pesticides, a conventional vs organic comparison on most of the foods, and links to more information and ways you can take action.

(OrganicJar) I was at the farmers market last weekend buying pears and found myself standing in a trance of gratitude, mesmerized by all the amazing foods in season right now. I kept thinking how lucky we are to live on such a magical planet where a tiny seed can grow into a giant tree producing hundreds of fruit every year. Each one of those fruit containing incredible nutrients that help each one of us live a healthier, happier life. And if that isn’t amazing enough…most fruit trees will produce fruit for 30-100 years. Wow.

After I came down from my gratitude high – partly because people began to stare. I went and bought one of my favorite foods: pears. Here are 9 reasons why pears should be in your diet. (see juicing recipes below)

Calms Digestion

The pectin and fiber in pears can help stop diarrhea and the cooling tannins can calm an irritated digestive tract.

Keeps You Hydrated

Pears are a watery food and when you add in the A and C vitamins and rich mineral content, they can help rehydrate you and keep you hydrated.

Improves ADHD

Because of there high fiber content, pears can slow down the sugar excitability that often accompanies ADHD. However they should be eaten in moderation because they do contain natural sugars themselves.

Helps Lower Cholesterol

Pears are high in pectin (higher than apples) which reduces cholesterol levels by bonding with dietary fat and cholesterol and removing them from the body through the intestine before they are absorbed through the bloodstream.

Boosts Immune System

Pears contain a good amount of vitamins A, K, C, B2, B3, B6 and minerals calcium, magnesium, potassium, copper so eating them is great for your immune system.

Hypoallergenic Fruit

Pears are a hypoallergenic fruit. So if you have issues with food sensitivities, you usually can eat pears with no adverse side effects. This also makes them a great fruit to introduce to infants.

Prevents Cancer

The hydroxycinnamic acid found in pears has been associated with preventing stomach and lung cancer.

Fights Alzheimer’s

The antioxidant quercetin found in the skin has been shown by a recent study at Cornell University to protect against Alzheimer’s disease. So don’t’ peel your pears!

Prevents Osteoporosis

Pears contain boron which our bodies need so we can retain calcium so they have been linked to osteoporosis prevention.

NOTICE:
Pears are one of the top 12 foods you should buy organic!

Check out the top 10 reasons why coconut oil is a miracle of nature and why YOU should be using it.

Unlike many other common oils, like soy (vegetable) and corn that contain LCT (long-chain triglycerides ) that are typically stored as fat. Coconut oil won’t make you fat. Coconut oil contains MCT (medium-chain triglycerides), which are an easy fuel for the body to burn, without turning to fat. When you add coconut oil into your diet, you’ll feel more full and eat fewer calories over all.

Coconut oil is very soothing so it’s an excellent massage oil for the skin. Applying coconut oil to the head followed with a gentle massage helps in removing mental fatigue. Just the natural aroma of coconuts is extremely soothing thus helping to lower your stress level.

Coconut oil is one of the best natural remedies for your hair. It helps in the healthy growth of new hair and provides a shiny complexion. It is an excellent conditioner and helps in the re-growth of damaged hair. It also provides the essential proteins required for nourishing damaged hair.

The small molecular structure of MCTs allows for easy absorption into your skin giving it a soft, smooth, and supple texture. Coconut oil strengthens your skin’s underlying connective tissues warding off lines and wrinkles and supplies healing and repairing properties. It prevents destructive free-radical formation and limits the damage excessive sun exposure can cause and helps rejuvenate the skin by removing the outer layer of dead skin cells.

The last time I made this recipe.

(OrganicJar) What is Khichdi? In order to find out we have to back up a bit. Over the last several months I’ve been experimenting with Ayurvedic cooking – an ancient traditional Hindu system of medicine which uses diet, herbal treatment, and yogic breathing. It’s considered by many scholars to be the oldest healing science and holistic approach to health that’s designed to help people live long, healthy, and well-balanced lives. The term Ayurveda itself is taken from the Sanskrit words ayus, meaning life or lifespan, and veda, meaning knowledge. (I’ll be writing more about Ayurveda so sign-up for our newsletter if you want to learn more.)

The Ayurveda Approach

The philosophical foundation of Ayurveda is that creation expresses itself through the five elements: space, air, fire, water and earth. These elements manifest in the body as the three governing principles called doshas: vata, pitta and kapha. Everyone has all three of these doshas to varying degrees, although one and sometimes two tend to be predominant and the other(s) secondary.

One of the main goals of Ayurveda is to maintain optimal health as well as support the bodies healing process by helping the body eliminate toxins and reestablish constitutional balance. To achieve this, Ayurveda emphasizes the importance of proper nutrition through proper food choices, food combining and cooking methods, as well as herbal nutrition, all based on the specific needs of the individual and any current imbalance of the doshas.

Okay, so what is Khichdi?

Khichdi – Your Body’s Reset Button

Khichdi is a delicious traditional Ayurvedic dish that’s known for its ability to detox the body and balance all three doshas: vata, pitta, and kapha. My Ayurvedic teacher explained it as a recipe that resets your body. I have to admit I was a little skeptical at first that it would detox my body and even more skeptical that I would feel any different. It’s funny how we don’t give any credit to traditions that have been used and passed down for thousands of years, but the reason I’m writing this article is because it truly did detox my body. I felt this ‘reset button’ so intensely that I had to share this recipe with all of you.

Khichdi – The Recipe

This recipe came from a friend of mine and it’s been passed down through generations. I hope you enjoy it and would love you to post photos of your khichdi on our Facebook Page!

INGREDIENTS:

Mung Beans (sprouted) …………. 1 Cup (removes toxins, pesticides & insecticides, from the body)
Not because I think it’s a ‘girly’ thing to do, I just never had a moment where I thought hmmm, maybe I’ll relax with a face mask tonight.

However when my friend Nicole said she had an amazing all natural and organic avocado butter mask recipe I thought, hmmm, why not. To my utter surprise it was an excellent experience that left me wondering…why had I not been doing these masks before?! So I wanted to share this recipe with all of you. It’s quick, all natural, organic, and left my skin glowing for days.

RECIPE:

1 Ripe Avocado, peeled and pitted

1 Egg Yolk

2 tablespoons of Honey

1 tablespoon of Evening Primrose Oil

1 teaspoon of Yogurt

INSTRUCTIONS:

Puree all the ingredients in a blender.

Place a warm washcloth over your face for 60 seconds to prep the skin.

Apply a thin layer of mask evenly to face and leave on for 10-20 minutes.

Relax.

Gently wipe off the mask with a moist cloth.

*Makes 1/2 cup.

Don’t forget…any left over mask can also be used on hands, feet, back, elbows, knees and any other rough spots or problem areas that need pampering.

Why is Avocado Amazing for the Skin?

With it’s high fat content and the rich consistency of the flesh and oil, avocados are an excellent choice as a moisturizer for the skin. Avocado penetrates the skin deeply and removes the dead skin cells. It helps remove the oil on your skin, unclog your pores and reduce the inflammation caused by acne.

(OrganicJar) Cholesterol is a steroid lipid (fat) found in the blood and is necessary for proper functioning of cell membranes. Our bodies already manufacture all the cholesterol we need, so it is not necessary to consume more. High levels of cholesterol have been shown to increase the risk of heart disease and stroke. Cholesterol lowering foods should be incorporated into everyone’s diet for optimal health. The percentages by which these foods lower cholesterol reflect people who have high levels of cholesterol greater than 200 mg/dL, and have been diagnosed with hypercholesterolemia. Different diets, lifestyles, and foods will work differently for different people. It is recommended that you buy a Cholesterol Test Kit, so you can monitor your cholesterol levels at home and see which diet and lifestyle works best for you. Below is a list of foods which lowers the “bad” LDL cholesterol, while leaving the “good” HDL cholesterol largely unaffected.

In a dose response study it was found that half a cup of almonds reduces cholesterol by 5% and 1 cup causes the full 10% reduction. As almonds are a high calorie food, it is not recommended that you eat more that a cup. Almonds are great as a snack, or as an addition to breakfast cereals like oatmeal.

Cholesterol Reduction: 2-5%
The plant sterols and cocoa flavanols in dark non-milk chocolate have been shown to reduce cholesterol by 2-5%. Further, plant sterols (phytosterols), found in all plants, and particularly plant oils like corn oil and soybean oil have been shown to lower LDL cholesterol by up to 16%. However, this reduction is largely due to inhibiting absorption of cholesterol, and would not have a large effect if you consumed little or no cholesterol.
