(OrganicJar) For a change of pace every now and then, I’m going to publish an article by Stan ‘the stickman’ as sort of a way to lampoon current events happening in our reality. Now, Stan doesn’t have the luxury of a big brain like you and I do, but nonetheless he will still attempt to make sense out of the world we live in. Let’s see what crazy theory he’s pieced together this week by connecting the dots…as he likes to call it.

(OrganicJar) The rotten economy is eating into sales of organic foods as fewer Americans put these often costly groceries on their plates. Overall sales of organic food are still rising, though the industry’s robust growth of recent decades is tapering off. Many devotees of organic foods are not willing to cut back though.

Despite the challenges, the Organic Trade Association forecasts sales of organic foods will rise by 18 percent a year, on average, through 2010. The association expects its customer base to grow on the assumption that prices will drop and mainstream retailers will stock a wider variety of products.

A July 2008 survey found that among customers who reported buying organic products, 56 percent had household incomes of more than $100,000 and 36 percent had incomes of less than $25,000.

Still, shoppers at all income levels appear to be reducing purchases of organics these days. Even I find it hard to pay $7.99 for 4oz of organic blueberries.

Here are some foods that you don’t ‘have’ to buy organic because they have a very low pesticide rating.

- Broccoli
- Eggplant
- Cabbage
- Banana
- Kiwi
- Asparagus
- Sweet peas (frozen)
- Mango
- Pineapple
- Sweet corn (frozen)
- Avocado
- Onion

Summary:

(OrganicJar) TV junk food ads do not make children fat, soft-drink makers and advertisers have told an inquiry, but psychologists say advertising heavily influences what foods children eat. And those aged under eight cannot tell the difference between an ad and a TV program, the Australian Psychological Society said.

The inquiry is considering a proposal to ban TV advertising for food and drink during children’s viewing hours. Under the draft law, the health minister could grant exemptions for healthy food and beverages.

Australian Beverages Council chief executive Tony Gentile said there was no link between obesity and advertising. ”I don’t believe that advertising has any marked effect, or that there is any evidence out there that it has a marked effect on obesity,” he said.

However, the Australian Psychological Society said advertising to children clearly influenced their food choices and the younger the child, the greater the impact. ”The marketing of junk foods to children uses most of the psychological and social techniques that we know to be effective in changing behavior.”

(OrganicJar) Scientists working in the FDA’s Center for Devices and Radiological Health division has revolted against the corrupt managers of its own department, accusing them of committing crimes. There is extensive documentary evidence that managers at CDRH have corrupted and interfered with the scientific review of medical devices, and withheld this from the public.

It is clear that the managers at CDRH have stopped caring about the health and safety of the American people who use these health devices. After the results of numerous studies, that all concluded the same results, the FDA tried to just file those results away.

The medical devices include products like cardiac stents, nerve stimulators to relieve depression, imaging equipment and breast implants. The specific brands were not mentioned and kept from the public.

(OrganicJar) An independent study commissioned by the Austrian Ministry of Health has found significant infertility effects from mice fed genetically modified (GM) corn. Monsanto, which has a near-world monopoly on all agricultural seeds tried to, not only stop the study from the beginning, but then tried to block the results from being published.

In one study design where mice were continuously breeding. Mice fed on GM corn had no litters or produced less offspring after the third or fourth litters, than those fed on conventional corn. The differences were statistically significant.

The corn, sold by Monsanto, contains a gene that produces the toxic “Bt” pesticide in every cell and in every bite. The results raise the question whether this toxin (or some other unpredictable change in the GM corn) might be contributing to the rise in infertility, allergies or other immune disorders in North America.

Monsanto (and the other GM corporations) have NEVER provided any help for feeding studies or other research over which they do not have direct control over the results. That is why truly independent studies are almost impossible to conduct.

Thoughts:

It’s a whole new wave of natural selection taking place. The evolution of the human race is about to make a major shift in favor of those who don’t poison themselves with toxic foods, medicines and consumer products. “Survival of the fittest” will soon come to mean “extinction of the chemically intoxicated.”

Remember: In many cases, infertility is Mother Nature’s way of telling conventional consumers that they’re too unhealthy to have babies anymore.

Summary:

(OrganicJar) “The financial crisis and prospect of global recession has created an unexpected opportunity to take dramatic action on behalf of the planet. It has become clear that governments will need to intervene in their economies on an unprecedented scale, and many are now considering stimulating growth with massive investment programs. However, it must be recognized that such large-scale intervention will not succeed unless we also protect the environmental capitol that underpins our economic health.” — WASHINGTON

The Opportunity

The response to the credit crunch has demonstrated the vast sums of money governments can make available at low rates of interest when they believe it is required. Already governments have pledged over 2.5 trillion dollars of preferential debt or direct funding to be made available to the financial sector over the next two years.

Greenpeace and others are calling for a planetary rescue package to create jobs, rebuild the economy, and protect the climate for future generations.

What Needs To Be Done:

1. Increase research and development on clean energy and energy efficiency. A new Greenpeace and European Renewable Energy Council report shows that investment in clean power and energy efficiency worldwide would create a $360 billion a year industry.

2. Quitting coal. The biggest contributor to global warming pollution in the United States is coal-fired power plants.

3. Address global warming and invigorate the economy, taxpayers can no longer afford to underwrite the cost of dirty, dangerous and prohibitively expensive technologies, like nuclear and so-called “clean coal”

4. Bring the nation’s power grid into the 21st century. Our power grid is outmoded, overloaded, and unable to provide the country the clean energy it needs now. A new report estimates that we lose six to nine percent of all the power that enters the grid at a cost of $20 billion annually.

5. Create a “forests for climate” fund. Healthy and expansive forests serve as critical “carbon sinks” that turn carbon dioxide pollution into oxygen.

Greenpeace’s global energy blueprint is available for download at:

Making The Transition

Finally, in order to jumpstart a clean energy economy, the government must not only create an environment where technological innovation is rewarded, it must require polluters to pay for their greenhouse gas emissions. Today, polluters dump carbon dioxide and other gases into the atmosphere free of charge while the public picks up the tab in the form of massive health costs, acid rain, and global warming impacts.

To move toward a clean economy, the United States needs to implement a cap-and-trade system that requires polluters to pay for their emissions. Polluters must be required to buy 100 percent of all pollution permits at public auctions managed by open and transparent bodies.

Greenpeace estimates that such an auction could generate $250 billion in the United States annually. The revenues must be used for public benefit, such as investments in renewable energy technology, grid development, public transport infrastructure, forest preservation, helping low and moderate income consumers with increased energy costs and helping vulnerable communities adapt to unavoidable climate impacts.

(OrganicJar) For the first time in a decade or more, U.S. consumers are trying to get by on fewer prescription drugs. As people around the country respond to financial hard times, drugs are sometimes having to wait.

The drug giant Pfizer, which makes Lipitor, the world’s top-selling prescription medicine, said U.S. sales of that drug were down 13 percent in the third quarter of this year. And although the overall decline in total prescriptions was less than 1 percent, it represents the first downturn after more than a decade of steady increases in prescriptions.
