Bananas: Organic vs Conventional. There is a Difference!

organic_conventional_bananaDeciding whether to buy organic or conventional bananas is a toughie. Organic ones are more expensive (usually at least 30 cents more per pound), and I’ve noticed that they seem to bruise more easily – anyone else notice that, too?

The major difference between the two are that conventional bananas are grown with synthetic fertilizers, insecticides, and herbicides to protect the crops from mold, bugs, and disease. On the other side, organic farmers use natural fertilizers such as manure and seaweed, insect predators and barriers to prevent pests, and they weed by hand or mulch in order to prevent weeds.

You may be thinking that all those chemicals used to grow conventional bananas are no big deal because you peel the fruit. But the chemicals are not just on the outside of the banana — they leach into the soil that is used to grow the produce. So even if you peel your banana, it doesn’t prevent you from ingesting small amounts of those chemicals.


Although you may feel better knowing most experts agree that the amount you ingest poses little threat to your health. If you’re concerned about the nutritional value of your food, there are ongoing studies exploring the connection between pesticides and nutrients in foods; so far it looks like organic is healthier. Organic produce is also better for the planet since chemical pesticides make their way into the soil and run off into water sources.

With the sky-rocketing prices of food, buying organic may not be feasible all the time. Bananas, along with avocados, mangos, papayas, and pineapples have been found to have the lowest pesticide residue. However, apples, cherries, grapes, nectarines, peaches, pears, raspberries, strawberries have very high pesticide residues so you might want to splurge on organic.

  1. I remember eating bananas in the Philippines and they tasted so much better than the crap sold to us in America. These bananas were much smaller and actually contained tiny black seeds.

  2. I appreciate your balance in this post. You tell both sides honestly, and you don’t often find that.

    I have to admit that I don’t splurge on organic bananas, mainly for the reason you stated. I figure we’re peeling them, so most of the chemicals are gone.

    I would LOVE to buy everything organic, but, financially, that just isn’t doable. And often, organic isn’t available in all the produce I buy. So we do the best we can.

  3. Whenever I eat a conventional banana, i get stomach cramps and start sneezing and coughing badly, that’s my reaction to pesticides. This NEVER happens with organic bananas / fruit.
    Besides that, it also tastes totally different too. So, I only eat organic fruits, better for me, better for the environment, better for the workers who deal with it every single day.

  5. I have not eaten bananas for YEARS…something about them just didn’t appeal (taste? after taste? indigestion?, irritated membranes in mouth? or just energetically?). Then my son insisted I try his organic banana – wow, what a difference! I am now enjoying bananas again! And I have heard the same from numerous other people..they are WORTH the price! oh, and the peel? it is a LOT more porous than one might think!

  6. Good article Jason; we get the same argument about tree nuts. Some say conventionally grown are fine since the nut is protected by a shell and hull. This grossly discounts the “systemic effect” of pesticides via sprays and ground applications. It is the same principle as using “Patches” for pain control or to “quit smoking”.

  7. I eat about 6 bananas a day, and here in France / Switzerland, organic bananas just taste better, and that’s enough reason to choose them!

    I started buying organic bananas after I traveled to Costa Rica and talked to locals about the “chemical bananas.” I learned that the chemicals used make the workers sick, and since the chemicals are sprayed via airplane they tend to drift into the nearby villages, and people breathe them in. I think it’s worth paying an extra buck or two to say “no” to this.

  10. In my country bananas cost about 1,3 dolalrs, organic is 3 times more expensive :S

  11. organic bananas does ‘bruise’ a lot easily than the conventional ones. i’m guessing because they don’t ontain all that pesticides. and i do agree that those chemicals do hurt our environment and even other species out there who are ingesting them as well.

Um thought you should know that my son used to work in the produce section of Walmart and Walmart has thier produce people pick out a couple of boxesof bananas, or whatever produce they have and then put organic stickers on them. They are regular stock fruits and vegetables that are labeled as organic in the store. SO if you want actual organic fruits and vegis you need to go to whole foods or something.

  16. Thanks for sharing that information. :( It makes me sad to think that people, including myself, have bought these items thinking that they really were organic. But now I know and will not be so easily fooled next time, or so I would hope. :-)

  17. Walmart and stores like them are giving organics a bad name. So I have stopped shopping a mainstream supermarkets for the most part.

  19. One of the reasons it made him mad was because, A. It was fraud and my husband and I are both Police officers so we raised him with a strong sense of right and wrong, and because we grow as much fruit and vegis as we can and go to pick your own places locally that use non-chemical methods to control weeds and insects and he knows the differance more so than most kids I think. He’s stood beside us and weeded the garden and harvested and tilled so to him it’s really offensive that Walmart does this. Apparently because it has such a thick skin they are allowed to do this under the FDA regulations in the case of bananas. Weird right? Organic has nothing to do with the skin but the FDA apparently thinks that with a thick skin the chemicals they put into the ground and onto the leaves that get asorbed into the plany don’t get past the skin? Go figure…It’s called osmosis, the people at the FDA need to go back to BIO 101.
