(OrganicJar) New research suggests that watermelon may produce effects in the body similar to that of Viagra, perhaps pointing the way to a natural remedy for men suffering from erectile dysfunction. Apparently, the flesh of watermelon contains higher levels of the amino acid citrulline than researchers had thought.
This is significant because the body converts citrulline into arginine, another amino acid that functions as a precursor to nitric oxide. Nitric oxide, in turn, plays a critical role in the dilation of blood vessels and the process of penile erection.
The drug Viagra functions primarily by targeting the nitric oxide signaling pathway in the penis.
It’s not known how much watermelon a man would need to consume to have an effect, but in a 2007 study, participants were able to increase their arginine levels 11 percent in three weeks by drinking three eight-ounce glasses of watermelon juice per day.
A four-ounce serving of watermelon contains approximately 150 milligrams of citrulline.
This is just another example of just how powerful food can be. You might have also noticed that it only took 3 weeks of consuming three 6oz glasses to increase their arginine levels by 11 percent…ONLY 3 weeks. Nutrition is power and we all have the ability to live a healthy active life. The true secret to health and happiness is nutrition, fitness and spiritual growth.
